Goodland,
Kansas
is situated in the northwest corner of the state
in the beautiful High
Plains region. It is conveniently located just
east of the Colorado
border, and one county south of the Nebraska
State line. The population was 4,948
at the time of the 2000 Census.
Goodland,
known as the “Sunflower Capital of the Sunflower
State”, is nestled in the heart of the expansive
grass-covered plains that begin in the central
river valleys and end at the foot of the
breathtaking Rocky
Mountains. In late summer, after the green
wheat turns gold, the area around Goodland is
abloom with acres of stunning sunflowers.
The Van
Gogh Sunflower Project exemplifies the
area’s great pride in its sunflowers. This
larger-than-life artwork is a 24x32 foot painting
displayed on an easel that is eighty feet high.
Just outside the town is Mount
Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas. The
"mountain" is really a hill that is
4,039 feet above sea level. Goodland's elevation
is 3,638 feet. Visitors enjoy leaving amusing
comments about climbing Mount Sunflower in the
registry.
The
area is renowned for its pheasant
hunting opportunities, as well as for its wild
turkey, deer, prairie dog, coyote and antelope hunting.
Northwest Kansas, which includes all of Sherman
County, is referred to as “The Pheasant
Capital of the World”. Kansas is one of the top
three pheasant harvest states in the Unites
States.
Goodland
is also home to the High
Plains Museum. The Museum houses over eight
thousand local treasures including several
permanent exhibits that chronicle the lives of
historical individuals and groups who once lived
in Goodland. A full-sized, automated replica of
America’s first
patented helicopter has been featured there
since 1979. Other interesting attractions include
the Goodland
Arts Center, the Queen
Anne Victorian House, Kidder
war memorial site, the Puppet Factory, the National
Weather Service tours and The Carnegie Arts
Center located in the local library.
In addition, the town has an 18-hole golf course,
a community
swimming pool, modern campgrounds, fish
stocked lakes, tennis courts and several city
parks. The Colorado
Rocky Mountains and Ozark
attractions are also within a reasonable driving
distance.
This
serene Kansas
community offers residents an unparalleled quality
of life. The changing seasons highlight the area's
wide range of beauty complemented by the stunning
sunrises and sunsets. Goodland boasts a low crime
rate and an affordable cost of living. The Northwest
Kansas Area Vocational Technical School and an
excellent public
school system serve the area's educational
needs.
As
the seat of Sherman
County, Goodland serves as the center of
retail trade for the Tri-State area, which
encompasses northwestern Kansas,
eastern Colorado
and southern Nebraska.
The sunflower market has soared in the past few
years and is responsible for the transformation of
the local economy. Goodland is the primary
producer of commercial sunflowers in the region
and is one of only two sunflower marketing centers
in the nation. The area's most significant
industry is vegetable oil derived from oil
sunflowers and confectionary sunflower processing.
Goodland
is small-town America at its best. With its
excellent quality of life surrounded by stunning
natural beauty, Goodland is clearly an ideal
choice for relocating a family or business.
